The Christmas music concert was a wonderful affair and the students involved (no less than 60 of them), once again showed they are not only very talented, but also very committed to helping run the evening and present a professional looking show. Parents were obviously very impressed with the passion in the performances and the professionalism of the students involved – well done everyone. To end the term, we were asked to do it all again in the morning and run the show for the benefit of years 7 & 8 – needless to say; they loved it!
The Music Department extra curricular program has never been so busy nor been so popular, the students who have been attending these clubs, bands, choirs and orchestras have all shown a real commitment to both improving the quality of the music and wanting to reach higher standards and play more advanced repertoire. A particular mention should be made for the students in both the St Aloysius’ College Orchestra and St Aloysius’ College Choir this term. These two ensembles have made amazing progress and the quality of their performances over the Christmas concerts was really impressive.
On the ‘note’ of the Music Department’s extra curricular timetable, please see below the weekly activities, this timetable has been updated since last term to include 2 new activities; ‘St Aloysius’ College Jazz Band’ will meet on Fridays afterschool, and with the help of Mr Garcia, ‘Classical Guitar Club’ will meet on Thursdays afterschool. New members are always welcome, it can be hard work and good quality music does require a full commitment but the rewards are so much greater when the work has been put in.
The Music Department is located in its own self contained purpose built block with 2 classrooms, a Music Technology suite equipped with Apple Mac computers, Recording Studio facilities, an ensemble room and six soundproofed instrumental teaching studios.
At KS3 all pupils have one music lesson every week.
At KS4 GCSE music is an option and boys who select music have three lessons each week.
At KS5 AS and A2 Music Technology students have six periods of music each week.
The Music ‘Extra-Curricular’ programme plays an important role in the life of St. Aloysius’ College’s pupils, there is a vibrant and varied range of additional activities: Classical Orchestra (traditional instruments), Rock Orchestra (modern instruments), Choir, Beatbox and Rap Club, African Drumming, Keyboard Club and Music Technology Club. In addition to these activities, pupils regularly use the facilities to rehearse their own ensembles, solo performances and compositions.
There is a popular instrumental music scheme where boys can pay for individual lessons on most instruments. The music department also runs a low cost instrumental hire scheme.
GCSE Music examination results at St. Aloysius’ College have achieved 100% pass rate which is the highest in Islington for the past ten years.
Pupils have the opportunity to perform at concerts both at St. Aloysius’ College and outside school for the London Borough of Islington.
