The English Department take selected classes, students and entire year groups on trips to enhance their understanding of English, texts and their cultural awareness wherever possible. We also arrange for performers to come in school. In Summer 2013, we were fortunate to welcome the writer Nick Hornby who met with the sixth form for a talk on creative writing (see News and Events). For the last three years, different year groups have attended performances at the Globe Theatre to see Shakespeare brought to life in Elizabethan style surroundings. In 2013, Year 10 braved the extremely chilly weather to see Romeo & Juliet; in 2012, Year 7 saw the magical A Midsummer Night's Dream; whilst in 2011, Year 9 went to see the gruesome Macbeth. Mr Mugglestone and Miss Outterside put on a production of the GCSE text DNA, a play by Dennis Kelly, to showcase some of the St. Aloysius' Talent.
This year we will see a production of Othello with Year 8 at The Globe.
Half of Year 8 went to the Globe theatre on Wednesday 11th March 2015 to see Shakespeare's Othello. The boys were groundlings and had to stand for the entire performance but it did mean they were at the very front! Luckily it was dry and warm. The play was action packed, with actors arriving on zip lines and running through the crowds. Othello is play about the dangers of jealousy and has a tragic end. The phrase 'green eyed monster' comes from this play.
This is the fifth year that St Aloysius have taken students to see a play at the Globe. It is part of the Playing Shakespeare productions which are sponsored by Deutsche Bank and aims to provide Shakespeare for free for children at state schools.

The Year 12 AS Literature class are going to see Much Ado About Nothing by Shakespeare at the Old Vic Theatre on Tuesday 1st October in the evening. The class are studying the play for their coursework on dramatic comedy and are looking forward to seeing it brought to life.
Year 12 and 13 will be attending an A' Level English Conference at the Institute of Education on the 22nd October 2013 to experience a University taster and listen to a series of lectures on key aspects of studying English at KS5.
The Year 10s have been to Highgate Cemetery as part of the Creative Writing Project.
