At St Aloysius we currently offer AS and A’ levels in English Literature and English Language both are AQA Specification B. These are demanding, rewarding and academic courses. You must LOVE reading and be confident at analysing texts and writing essays. You need to achieve a grade B and above at GCSE English Language and Literature to be eligible for the courses. It is an excellent course to prepare you for many career paths, particularly journalism, teaching/lecturing and publishing.
We enrich the courses with trips and theatre visits as much as possible. Recent trips include: an Othello workshop and tour at the Globe theatre; a visit to the Institute of Education for an A’ level conference; a performance of Much Ado About Nothing at the Old Vic theatre; a performance of Frankenstein and a visit to The British Library's Writing Britain exhibition.
In both years 12 and 13 you will have 6 x 50 minute lessons a week with your two English teachers. It is your responsibility to contact them if you are absent and to collect work missed.
The current courses are made up of coursework and examination. From September 2015 the A’ Level courses will be changing nationally. An outline of the new courses will be available here from the end of the year.

On the 26-27th June, a group of Y12 and 13 A' level English students participated in a creative writing work shop based on the theme of freedom with travel writer Rosanna Lowe. The group looked at a range of Asian literature and stimulus for inspiration and discussed freedom in detail. The project is in collaboration with Asia House and the students have shared some of their work on a blog. Please have a read by clicking on the link below:
The students will also be entering a competition run by Asia House. The five best submissions will be awarded prizes that will include the opportunity to spend a day shadowing a professional in the business of writing (to be confirmed but could include a BBC journalist, a comics festival organiser, someone from online audio forum AudioBoo, a journalist at the Marylebone Journal, the editor of Asia Global Impact Magazine or the social media manager at Asia House). All winners will have their submission published online on the Asia House website. The top winner will have his or her submission read out and recorded by a radio or television professional and posted on AudioBook ( Asia House's channel). (to be confirmed) For more information on how to enter the competition go to:
