The Department

There are three fully functioning Art rooms in the department and we make effective use of the ICT rooms in order to develop the pupils' graphic design skills. The department will aim to enable pupils:

• To develop creativity and imaginative thought

• To develop skills as an independent learner

• To use a range of art materials with confidence, and develop visual understanding through evaluation activities

• To develop an understanding of the work of artists and designers; and how they affect us

• To develop a portfolio of work for further education or employment.

In KS3 and KS4, pupils are taught in mixed ability groups. During KS3, we aim, in accordance with the National Curriculum, to enhance students' awareness of the language of art as a form of communication and means of expression of feelings and ideas. We also aim to develop their visual perception and encourage visual literacy. At KS3, all pupils are taught Art, with particular emphasis on developing the skill of observational drawing.

At KS4, students can opt to take the GCSE in Art & Design or Graphic Design.

At KS4, students have the opportunity to engage in a range of activities designed to enhance their appreciation of the subject and its place in the world. Trips to museums and galleries form a fundamental part of this approach . This Academic Year (2011 – 2012) already, Yr 10 pupils have been on a trip to the OXO Gallery as part of The Rivers of The World project and the 6th Form Graphic Design students have been on a workshop visit to the Saatchi Gallery.

Results at GCSE are very good:

GCSE (Fine Art) = 92% pass rate (A*-C) June 2011.

GCSE(Graphic Design) = 77% pass rate (A* - C) June 2011.

The department has recently reintroduced A Level Art. Students are offered the opportunity to study A Level Fine Art and A Level Graphic Design. We currently have two groups studying for AS Levels in both these options (Year 12) and two groups studying for A2 in Year 13.

Results for the AS Examinations ( A Level) in June 2011 were very good:

AS Level Fine Art = 92% pass rate.

AS Graphic Design = 92% pass rate.

We are confident that our students will produce an equally good performance in their A2 examinations next summer.
